PAPHOS PLAYS HOST TO 60’S SINGING STARS

If you’re of a certain age and remember the swinging sixties, then the place to be this coming weekend is Paphos Fort. On Saturday, 30th May, the ancient fort will be throbbing to the sounds of sixties music sensations, The Searchers and The Foundations, who will be performing live to the delight of their many fans.

According to a report in the Cyprus Mail, neither of the groups has exactly been taking it easy over the last few decades - The Searchers have just returned from a sell-out tour in Australia. Last year they released The Very Best of the Searchers, a compilation of 25 of their classic hits and sales have recently hit the 30 million mark. The Foundations with their timeless hits, including the famous ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, are in constant demand in arenas and concert halls all over the world.

Concert organiser, Tony Willmett from Carpe Diem Promotions, said it was pretty difficult getting both bands together at the same time and place. “It’s been like juggling five plates in the air at once - getting the right bands together at the right time and in the right place.” As Wilmett discovered, both groups - two of the UK’s best-loved bands from the sixties - are very much in demand and they just go on and on. He believes it’s all down to the feel-good factor and the happy memories that these hits evoke when audiences hear them.

The Searchers were of course fellow Liverpudlians and contemporaries of The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Hits like ‘Needles and Pins’ and ‘Sweets for my Sweet’ kept them in the charts throughout the sixties. Over the years the band has seen members come and go but the current foursome has been together since 1980 and consist of the original founder of the group, John McNally, one of the original members, Frank Allen, and Spencer James and Eddie Roth. Together they make up one of the most popular rock and roll bands on the UK concert circuit.

The Foundations were a soul band who took the UK by storm in the late 1960s and were the first multiracial group to have a number one hit in there with ‘Baby Now That I’ve Found You’. They are hugely popular and their songs regularly feature in films and TV ads. When they perform their greatest hits in Paphos on Saturday one of the original members from all those years ago - Clem Curtis – will be there along with the six other musicians who make up the current Foundations line-up.
