The 2009 Cyprus Rally in Limassol

The people of Limassol have only just packed their carnival costumes away, but there’s more excitement in store for them this week as Limassol becomes the location for one of the world’s major motorsport events, the FIA World Rally Championships.

The 2009 Cyprus Rally will take place this coming weekend (Friday 13th to Sunday 15th March), with the ceremonial start on Thursday 12th at 8.00pm at the Palais Des Sports Spyros Kyprianou stadium on the outskirts of the town.

Even if you’re not a motorsport fan, the organisers of the rally have arranged a very special concert by Greek singing superstar Sakis Rouvas, who will be performing a selection of hits from his latest album. His repertoire is bound to include ‘This is Our Night’ - the song chosen to represent Greece at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow. The concert begins at 9.00pm, immediately after the ceremonial start of the rally.

If you are a true rally fan, why not go down and join in the fun – as well as the world’s press, motor-rally champions galore will be there, including the reigning world champion Sebastien Loeb, the most successful WRC driver of all time and favourite to win the rally.

Crowd favourite Petter Solberg, the 2003 world champion, is also returning to the island for the event as is a host of other famous names. So the countdown has begun, the rally HQ is set up, along with the service park and press office and it’s almost time for the fun to begin.

Although the Limassol carnival is officially over, its atmosphere will continue for just a little bit longer in this part of Cyprus.

Finishing Ceremony: Sunday March 15, 2:45pm Limassol sea front road, Yermasoyia.

The service park where all cars will return to and be based for the rally will be located in the same place and is open to the public.
