FAMAGUSTA CYPRUS

FAMAGUSTA (AMMOCHOSTOS)

Famagusta can be found on the south-east coast of Cyprus, just a short drive from Larnaca’s international airport. Only a small section of the Famagusta administrative district is within the Republic of Cyprus, the remainder is under Turkish control in the occupied north of the island. Although the district is divided, the section within the Republic of Cyprus contains endless delights for visitors and homebuyers alike and is a popular spot for holidaymakers. There are long stretches of golden, sandy Blue Flag beaches - some of the best on the island, where there’s far more to do than just sunbathe. Cape Greco, the awe-inspiring eastern peninsula National Forest Park, has secluded coves and sea caves with some fantastic snorkelling and diving to be had by water sports enthusiasts.

The Famagusta district contains the popular resort of Agia Napa, which was once just a little fishing village but is now a major tourist spot during the summer months. Although a popular party town, Agia Napa is also home to a beautiful fishing harbour and a medieval monastery right in the centre of the village. Protaras is a quieter, but still popular, resort which has 16km of beautiful coastline and there’s the delightful town of Paralimni, which is the main administrative town in the area, since the Turkish invasion in 1974 (Famagusta town is within the occupied area.). Paralimni has plenty of modern shops and facilities but hasn’t lost any of its traditional charm. If you’re looking for tradition, there are countless picturesque Cypriot villages in this south-eastern part of the island and some of the most popular with homebuyers are Kapparis, a coastal village on the outskirts of Paralimni, Dherynia which is inland a little and Avgorou, to the west of Paralimni.

About Famagusta

Like much of Cyprus, the heart of this beautiful area is the sea but if you’re not a water sports fan, there are plenty of other, more gentle ways to enjoy it. Apart from relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches, why not sit and watch the fishing boats come in? One quiet little spot, popular with locals is Potamos Liopetriou, where you can watch the fishermen unload their catches. Sip a cold glass of wine while the catch makes its way from the boat to the table of any of the local fish restaurants, and then savour their most succulent offerings. And guess what? You can’t take them home, but this area produces those famous Cyprus potatoes and is known locally as Kokkinochoria, (red soil villages), because of the rich red earth in which the potatoes are grown.

When the children tire of the beach, you can try the fabulous WaterWorld WaterPark, on the outskirts of Agia Napa. If just the thought of that wears you out, why not visit the Marine Life Museum or the new Sea Musuem, both in Agia Napa and exhibiting a fascination collection of marine life - past and present. The Sea Museum is home to a fascinating replica of a 4th century trading ship which was sunk off the coast of Kyrenia - great for lovers of pirate stories! So for sea and water-lovers of all kinds, Famagusta is the place to be.
