Why Cyprus is different
Perhaps because of its rich and varied history, Cyprus stands apart from other popular holiday and retirement locations. This beautiful island is politically part of Europe (the Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union in May 2004) but geographically its nearer to the Middle East, strategically positioned in the Eastern Mediterranean between the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. So you can enjoy all the benefits of an exotic Mediterranean location and yet still feel very much at home.

Although the Republic of Cyprus is predominantly Greek, due to more than 1500 years of Greek influence on the island, it also has a familiar, comfortable feel. You can relax in Cyprus thanks partly to that famous warm welcome that youll receive from Cypriots, but also because Cyprus was administered by the British until 1960. English is spoken by around 90 per cent of Greek Cypriots so you wont experience any language difficulties when you visit the island. Professionals such as lawyers, banking staff and estate agents speak English fluently. In addition, the legal and banking systems closely resemble those in Britain and you can drive on the left hand side of the road! All that and the sunshine ...

What Cyprus has to offer
Cyprus is often called a land of contrasts and thats what really makes it different from other popular destinations. Youll find those contrasts everywhere on the island and they mean that both visitors and residents can enjoy the best of all worlds in Cyprus.

Of course, theres no shortage of traditional Mediterranean delights, such as more than 340 days of sunshine per year, stunning beaches and dramatic scenery. Yet what really sets Cyprus apart is the ease with which it combines its ancient cultural heritage and the needs of a modern cosmopolitan society. You can gaze in awe at the carefully preserved Greek amphitheatres, Roman temples, beautiful mosaics and Byzantine monasteries.

Yet all this history is just a stones throw from modern shopping facilities with familiar high street names and a vast range of both modern and traditional housing. All this is supported with an efficient transport and communications network, excellent schools, hospitals and medical facilities.

However you like to spend your leisure time, Cyprus has something for you.

Cyprus is one of the few places where you can enjoy the beach in the morning and within an hour be skiing down Mount Olympus in the Troodos mountains.

Among the more energetic sports available to you are mountain-biking, hiking, a whole range of water sports, tennis, horse-riding and top class golfing facilities.

Those who prefer more tranquil pastimes will find the country a paradise for bird-watchers and botanists. Cyprus is on the migration route of many rare species of birds which are often spotted on the island. Whats more its also home to more than 100 species of plants that you cant find anywhere else in the world.
