CYPRUS AIRPORTS UPDATE
Larnaca Airport
Cyprus' largest airport is Larnaca International Airport, situated around 5km south of the city. It's currently undergoing major expansion works to deal with the enormous growth in passenger numbers over the last few years. In just one year - between 2006 and 2007 - arrivals at Larnaca doubled from 2.5 million to 5 million.
The airport will have a new terminal - the old terminal will be used as a cargo facility - and the runway will be extended. Already built is a new air traffic control tower, a new fire station, a runway extension and improvements to the road infrastructure serving the airport (A3 motorway and B4 road, new junctions to the airport).
For those of you who are regular users of Larnaca airport, the completion of the new terminal is due in June 2009 and will serve 7.5 million passengers a year.
Paphos Airport
The expansion work at Paphos International airport in the west of the island is currently approaching completion and should be finished this month. All new facilities will then be tested and will be open for business by November of this year.
Paphos airport will have a new terminal with 24 check-in desk and increased car park space. This airport is popular with millions of tourists who visit this part of Cyprus regularly and if you're one of them, you'll be pleased to hear that a new four-lane highway is also under construction. This will link the town of Paphos with the airport so traffic congestion during the tourist season will be eased on the current routes, the B6 and the E603.

Kataklysmos (Festival of the Flood) - 13th - 18th June
The word kataklysmos in Greek means flood and references to the flood are found both in the bible - the book of Genesis - and in the Greek myth of Deukalion. Some people believe that Kataklysmos originated from ancient ceremonies honouring Aphrodite and Adonis.
Whatever the significance, this is a unique Cypriot celebration which occurs 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter and marks the day of the Holy Spirit - or Pentecost. It's celebrated in coastal towns across Cyprus (although they celebrate them on different days) and celebrations always involve a lot of water!
There are concerts, singing and dancing and competitions both near and in the water. The most popular custom involves throwing water at one another, which symbolises the purification of the body - so enjoy yourself but be prepared to get wet - it's the only way to enjoy Kataklysmos. Celebrations take place in the harbour area of each town.
So we hope you've enjoyed our June newsletter and will enjoy some of the events we've told you about.
